"No, thank YOU."

Thank you has really become one of the most overused phrases, I believe. We've come to a point in society where thank you doesn't really hold the same value it used to in the past. In fact, these two words have become so trite nowadays that people say it not only when they don't mean it, but also when they don't even mean to say it.

Thank you! Thank you. [smile] I'll see you later! Thank you! [walk away] That's ok, I'll call back later. Thank you! [click]

Thank you has become the default answer to every closing remark in a conversation. It's what people say when they're either a) too distracted to listen to you or b) were not even paying attention to you in the first place.

I remember I once asked someone if she lived in my building, and she looked at me like I just complimented her and then quickly replied with an ecstatic "thank you!".

What a crazy world.
